Erling Haaland’s decisive goal has become the focus of heated debate after Manchester City secured a victory over Manchester United in a dramatic Premier League derby at Old Trafford.
The Norwegian striker’s goal ultimately proved to be the match-winner, but controversy quickly followed as questions were raised over whether the goal should have been allowed to stand after a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.
While replays appeared to show that Haaland himself was in an onside position when the ball was played, attention shifted to Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who was involved in the attacking sequence. Critics argued that Fernandez may have been in an offside position when Josko Gvardiol delivered the initial ball into the area, prompting debate over whether his involvement should have affected the decision.
Following the review, the Premier League Match Centre stated that Fernandez had not played the ball and therefore was not deemed to have interfered with play in a way that warranted an offside offence. As a result, the goal was allowed to stand.
The decision drew frustration from the Manchester United camp. United head coach Michael Carrick questioned the outcome and expressed concern over the effectiveness of modern officiating systems despite the extensive use of technology and multiple layers of review.
Carrick said he struggled to understand how controversial decisions could still occur despite the presence of referees, assistants, VAR officials, and numerous camera angles available to review key incidents. While critical of the ruling, he avoided placing blame on his players, instead focusing on the team’s overall performance.
Despite the defeat, Carrick noted that Manchester United showed positive aspects during the match but ultimately failed to produce the decisive moments needed to secure a result. The loss leaves the manager reflecting on a difficult afternoon after collecting four points from his opening four league matches of the new season.
The controversial goal is likely to remain a major talking point among players, coaches, pundits, and supporters in the days ahead, adding another chapter to the long-running debate over the interpretation of offside rules and the role of VAR in modern football.
For Manchester City, however, the victory could prove significant in the early stages of the Premier League campaign, while Manchester United are left to ponder what might have been if the pivotal decision had gone the other way.
