Firefighters in eastern Victoria have brought under control a dramatic blaze that erupted during routine maintenance at a major gas‑fired power station. The fire broke out at Alinta Energy’s Bairnsdale Power Station on Power Station Road in Hillside shortly before 2:30pm, triggering an immediate emergency response.
Thirteen crews from the Country Fire Authority (CFA) arrived to find flames burning nearly 20 metres above ground level. Authorities confirmed that an explosion occurred during the incident, though the cause has not yet been determined. All staff members were safely evacuated from the facility as a precaution.
The Bairnsdale Power Station, a gas‑fired peaking plant capable of generating up to 94 megawatts of electricity, typically operates only when the grid is under heavy demand. Its rapid‑response capacity makes it a critical part of Victoria’s energy infrastructure.
In a statement, an Alinta Energy spokesperson said the fire began while maintenance work was underway on one of the plant’s turbines. Fire crews managed to contain the blaze within an hour, preventing further damage and restoring safety to the site.
