Train Collision Halts Chattogram Rail Links After 12 Killed in Cumilla Tragedy

2 min read

Rail communication between Chattogram and the rest of Bangladesh has been brought to a standstill after a devastating train accident in Cumilla left at least 12 people dead and several others injured.

The suspension has caused major disruption across the network as authorities rush to clear the tracks and restore services.

Railway officials confirmed that a rescue train from Akhaura is on its way to the crash site to recover the damaged carriages and reopen the line. Mostafizur Rahman, Divisional Railway Manager of the Chattogram division, said teams are working urgently to resume operations.

“A rescue train has been dispatched from Akhaura. We hope it will reach the scene soon and complete the recovery work,” he said.

The accident occurred on Saturday when a train rammed into a passenger bus at a level crossing in Cumilla, killing 12 people on the spot and injuring eight others. The impact left the bus mangled and the tracks blocked, prompting the immediate suspension of rail services on the busy route.

As rescue efforts continue, authorities are assessing the damage and investigating how the collision occurred. The tragedy has once again raised concerns about safety at level crossings across the country, many of which remain unprotected or poorly monitored.
