Democrat James Talarico has secured a stunning victory in the Texas Senate race, defeating Republican Ken Paxton in what is being described as one of the biggest political upsets of the US midterm elections.
The win is historic for Texas, marking the first time since 1988 that a Democrat has won a US Senate seat in the traditionally conservative state. Talarico’s victory also played a crucial role in helping Democrats gain full control of the US Congress, following a wave of election wins across the country.
A former schoolteacher and state legislator, Talarico entered the race as a relatively lesser-known figure but gained momentum by focusing heavily on the rising cost of living, inflation, healthcare affordability, and economic pressures facing working families.
Throughout the campaign, Paxton and Republican allies sought to portray Talarico as too progressive for Texas voters. Paxton frequently campaigned alongside President Donald Trump, hoping to energize the Republican base and maintain the party’s hold on one of its strongest states.
However, as vote counts rolled in, supporters gathered at a watch party in Austin, the Texas capital, erupted in celebration after major networks projected Talarico as the winner.
Witnesses described scenes of jubilation as supporters hugged, cheered, and celebrated a result many had considered impossible just a few years ago.
For decades, Democrats struggled to win statewide elections in Texas, long regarded as a cornerstone of Republican political strength. Political analysts say Talarico’s victory reflects shifting demographic trends, voter frustration over economic issues, and increased turnout among younger and suburban voters.
The race also became the most expensive Senate contest in US history, with spending exceeding half a billion dollars. Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk reportedly contributed US$158 million to a political action committee supporting Paxton, a development that became a frequent target of Talarico’s campaign messaging.
The result is expected to have major implications for national politics, strengthening Democratic influence in Congress while prompting renewed debate about the future political direction of Texas.
