Fresh unrest erupted in Gazipur on Sunday as garment workers from several factories staged demonstrations and blocked major highways, causing widespread traffic disruptions and clashes with law enforcement agencies.
Workers from factories located in the Palli Bidyut and Mouchak areas occupied sections of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill and creating long delays for commuters and transport operators.
According to Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan, authorities eventually dispersed the protesters following several rounds of confrontation between demonstrators and law enforcement personnel. However, workers in other parts of the district continued their protests, blocking both the Dhaka-Tangail Highway and the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway.
Tensions escalated around noon when protesters reportedly set fire to a police vehicle on the Naojor Flyover, intensifying the standoff between demonstrators and security forces.
Authorities also reported that a member of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was injured after being struck by bricks allegedly thrown during the clashes.
Hiron Mia, an official at the Chowrasta Modern Fire Service Station, said firefighters were alerted to the vehicle fire but were initially unable to access the scene due to road blockades and obstructions caused by the protest.
The damaged police vehicle was later removed from the area using a recovery truck as authorities worked to restore order and reopen affected roads.
The latest demonstrations come amid ongoing labour unrest in Bangladesh’s garment sector, where workers have been demanding higher wages and improved conditions. The protests have repeatedly disrupted transport networks and industrial areas in recent days.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as efforts remain underway to ease tensions and restore normal traffic flow in the affected regions.
