Chief Justice Calls for More Tribunal Buildings and Greater Use of Technology in Courts

Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury has called for the urgent construction of adequate tribunal buildings in all divisional cities and greater use of information technology in court proceedings to help ensure faster and more effective delivery of justice.

The Chief Justice made the remarks while addressing judicial officers of the Bangladesh Judicial Service serving in the Sylhet Division at a meeting held in Sylhet.

During the programme, judges and court officials from Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, and Sunamganj highlighted several challenges facing subordinate courts, including shortages of judges, insufficient support staff, and infrastructure limitations that affect the smooth functioning of the judicial system.

In response, the Chief Justice assured judicial officers that effective measures would be taken to address the issues and improve court operations across the division.

Emphasising the need to strengthen judicial infrastructure, Justice Zubayer said sufficient tribunal buildings should be established in every divisional city as a matter of priority. He noted that expanding tribunal facilities would help improve access to justice and support the efficient handling of cases.

The Chief Justice also directed relevant authorities to maximise the use of information technology in appropriate areas of judicial proceedings. He specifically highlighted the importance of digital solutions for recording evidence and producing accused persons before courts, saying technology can play a significant role in improving efficiency and reducing delays.

He assured members of the judiciary that the Supreme Court would provide the necessary support to advance technology-based reforms within the court system.

Additionally, Justice Zubayer stressed the importance of making full use of official court working hours. He instructed judges to remain at their workplaces during prescribed hours and not leave without permission from the appropriate authority.

The remarks reflect ongoing efforts to modernise Bangladesh’s judicial system through improved infrastructure, increased digitalisation, and more efficient case management practices.
