Telstra MessageBank Glitch Floods Customers With False Missed Call Alerts

2 min read

Thousands of Telstra customers were left confused after receiving a flood of missed call and voicemail notifications from contacts who had not actually attempted to call them, sparking concerns of another network issue affecting Australia’s largest telecommunications provider.

The disruption coincided with a spike in user reports on outage monitoring platform DownDetector, prompting many customers to question whether Telstra was experiencing a broader network failure.

In a statement, Telstra confirmed it was aware of the issue and said the problem had been resolved. The company attributed the incident to a fault within its MessageBank service rather than any disruption to its core mobile network.

According to Telstra, customers may have received delayed notifications in bulk once the system was restored, creating the appearance of numerous missed calls and voicemails that had accumulated during the outage.

“We experienced an issue with our MessageBank service earlier today, which has now been fixed,” a Telstra spokesperson said.

“You might notice a number of delayed missed call and voicemail notifications arriving all at once.”

“We’re sorry for how confusing this must be.”

The company stressed that the incident did not affect Triple Zero (000) emergency calls, voice calls, or mobile data services.

The incident comes only months after a major nationwide Telstra outage caused widespread disruption across Australia and affected access to emergency services. During the July outage, hundreds of Triple Zero calls reportedly failed to connect as nearly 45 percent of the network’s call and data services were impacted.

While Sunday’s issue was significantly smaller in scale, the sudden influx of notifications caused frustration and uncertainty among customers who feared they had missed urgent calls.

Telstra said normal MessageBank operations have now resumed and customers do not need to take any action.
