The government will provide all possible support for the installation of solar panels on residential, institutional, and industrial buildings across Bangladesh as part of its broader strategy to strengthen energy security and expand renewable energy generation.
The announcement was made by Mahdi Amin, Adviser to the Prime Minister and spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, while addressing a seminar titled “Leading by Example: Scaling Rooftop Solar in Public Sector” at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka. The event was held as part of Solar Expo Bangladesh 2026.
Mahdi Amin said the government would conduct feasibility studies to identify suitable residential, institutional, and industrial buildings for rooftop solar installations, ensuring that projects are implemented based on capacity and practicality.
He noted that Bangladesh’s solar energy targets are not a recent initiative but reflect a long-standing vision championed by Tarique Rahman. According to Amin, the Prime Minister repeatedly emphasized the importance of prioritising solar power while in opposition, believing that renewable energy would play a vital role in achieving self-reliance in the country’s energy sector.
The adviser said that vision is now being translated into national policy, with the government placing special emphasis on renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources alongside traditional power generation.
Highlighting the Prime Minister’s personal commitment to renewable energy, Mahdi Amin said Tarique Rahman had installed solar panels on the roof of his own residence as an example of practical leadership and support for clean energy initiatives.
Recalling the BNP government’s earlier tenure, Amin said several policies promoting environmentally sustainable energy had been introduced more than two decades ago, even at a time when solar power had not yet gained widespread global popularity.
Describing energy diversification as a national priority, he said Bangladesh is actively exploring multiple renewable energy options, including electricity generation from waste, while seeking to maximize the country’s significant solar power potential.
He added that initiatives such as Solar Expo Bangladesh 2026 provide an important platform for showcasing innovation, encouraging investment, and accelerating the transition toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
