Paramount Pictures announced today that Academy Award-winner Chloé Zhao will direct the next installment of the Star Trek franchise. Zhao, whose credits include Nomadland and Marvel’s Eternals, is set to begin pre-production in early 2026 with a projected release in mid-2027.
Studio executives say Zhao’s character-focused style will bring fresh depth to the sci-fi epic. “Her vision aligns perfectly with our mission to explore humanity’s greatest challenges,” said Paramount president Brian Robbins. The film’s script, by veteran Trek writer Simon Pegg, remains under wraps.
Fans and industry observers alike praised the pairing as a bold step to revitalize the storied series. Zhao’s appointment marks the first time a woman of Asian descent will helm a Star Trek theatrical release.
