Asian Cup 2027 Postponed as Middle East Security Concerns Force Schedule Change

2 min read

Australia’s hopes of lifting a second AFC Asian Cup title will have to wait longer after the tournament was postponed by almost a year due to ongoing security concerns and logistical challenges in the Middle East.

Originally scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia during January and February 2027, the continent’s premier football tournament will now take place from December 23, 2027, to January 21, 2028, subject to final approval from FIFA.

The decision follows escalating instability in the region, including attacks claimed by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement. Security concerns intensified after a strike on Riyadh International Airport last month reportedly killed at least 12 people and injured more than 300 others.

In a statement, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said the tournament had been rescheduled because of exceptional circumstances affecting the region.

“The Organising Committee for AFC Asian Cup approved to reschedule the flagship national team tournament in light of the current exceptional circumstances arising from developments in the region, including substantial logistical complexities and travel disruptions.”

The postponement represents a major setback for Saudi Arabia, which had intended to use the Asian Cup as an important test event ahead of hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The kingdom has invested heavily in global sport through its Public Investment Fund, securing major international events across football, golf, boxing, esports, cycling, and tennis.

The impact of regional tensions has already been felt across the sporting world. Several high-profile events scheduled in Saudi Arabia have either been postponed or cancelled in recent months.

Golf’s Saudi International on the Asian Tour has been postponed indefinitely, while the Urban World Championships cycling event was cancelled. The Six Kings Slam exhibition tennis tournament in Riyadh has also been moved from October to December, and FIFAe Finals 2026 in Jeddah have been postponed to a later date.

For the Socceroos, the delay means an extended wait before another opportunity to challenge for continental glory after winning their maiden Asian Cup title in 2015.

Football authorities are expected to provide further details once FIFA formally approves the revised tournament dates.
