Thousands of people have been evacuated across Greece as wildfires continue to rage in multiple regions, including parts of the mainland and several popular tourist islands.
On Crete, fires have burned thousands of hectares of land, prompting the temporary evacuation of 8,000 people from villages and tourist areas. In central Greece, around 500 people mostly tourists were also evacuated on Friday as flames approached residential zones.
New fires have broken out on the islands of Paros, Andros, and Kalymnos, stretching emergency services already battling blazes across the country.
Greece is among several European nations experiencing devastating wildfires after successive heatwaves created ideal conditions for rapid fire spread. Authorities warn that strong winds and dry vegetation continue to pose a major threat.
