A Year 7 student from St Aloysius College was left with serious leg injuries after being dragged onto the tracks at North Melbourne Railway Station, with the school confirming the accident occurred when the boy’s schoolbag became caught on the mirror of a passing train.
The incident happened on Monday afternoon and left the student trapped under a carriage for up to an hour. Paramedics described the scene as deeply distressing as emergency crews worked to free him.
In an update to parents, Principal Mary Farah said the school had been briefed on how the accident unfolded. The student had been standing with friends near the edge of Platform 6 when the train arrived and his bag was snagged, pulling him off balance and onto the tracks.
Several students witnessed the fall and reacted immediately. “A fellow student pressed the platform emergency button and contacted Triple Zero (000), while other students communicated clearly with transport authorities,” Farah wrote, commending their quick thinking.
Authorities continue to review the circumstances of the accident, while the school is offering support to students who saw the incident.
