Police are questioning an 84-year-old man after a fatal crash on the New England Highway near Glen Aplin, in southern Queensland, where an SUV rolled while trying to avoid a car allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the road.
Emergency services were called just before 2pm on Saturday after the southbound SUV swerved off the highway near Stanthorpe, struck a culvert and rolled several times before crashing into a power pole. A 92-year-old male passenger died at the scene, while an 85-year-old female passenger was critically injured. The 20-year-old female driver suffered minor injuries.
Police allege the other vehicle, a light-coloured sedan, failed to stop and continued driving. Following a public appeal, officers located the car and its owner on Sunday afternoon, with the 84-year-old man now assisting with inquiries. Investigators are urging witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage to contact police.
The crash has pushed Queensland’s road toll this year to 114 deaths, up from 89 at the same time last year.
