CDC Coordinates Evacuation of Americans as Hantavirus‑Hit MV Hondius Nears Tenerife

As the MV Hondius approaches the port of Granadilla on Tenerife, US health authorities are intensifying efforts to support and evacuate American passengers caught in the ship’s hantavirus outbreak.

The CDC said it is working closely with the US State Department and international partners to arrange evacuation plans. In a statement on its official website, the agency confirmed that several US passengers had already disembarked before the outbreak was identified, with some now back in the United States.

The CDC said it has notified the relevant state health departments and is providing “timely updates, resources, and guidance on how to protect these passengers and their families and communities.”

US passenger and travel influencer Jake Rosmarin, who has been documenting the situation on Instagram, said that all passengers remain symptom‑free and in good spirits. Meanwhile, Spain has deployed the Civil Guard, setting up tents and security perimeters at the port ahead of the ship’s arrival.

The World Health Organization reported eight confirmed infections, including three deaths, linked to the outbreak. According to the WHO, two medical evacuation flights from Cabo Verde  carrying two symptomatic confirmed patients and one previously suspected case landed in the Netherlands on 6 and 7 May.

The Hondius outbreak has triggered a complex multinational public‑health response, with authorities across continents tracking passengers who disembarked earlier in the voyage.
