A fire at a shopping centre west of Tehran has left at least eight people dead and 36 injured, according to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, adding fresh anxiety at a moment when a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States is already under strain.
Iranian media, including the judiciary‑linked Mizan news agency, released footage showing a thick plume of smoke rising above the building. Reuters verified the location by matching surrounding structures, utility poles, trees and road patterns with archived and satellite imagery.
The blaze erupted just a day after an exchange of fire between Iran and the United States, raising concerns about the stability of the ceasefire. While officials have not linked the fire to the geopolitical tensions, the timing has intensified public unease.
Local fire authorities said the building’s cladding was highly flammable, which caused the flames to spread rapidly and made rescue operations more difficult. Emergency crews worked for hours to contain the blaze as smoke blanketed the area.
An investigation is expected to determine whether safety violations or structural issues contributed to the severity of the incident.
