Bangladesh’s proposed Padma Barrage Project is expected to be formally inaugurated next year, according to Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee.
The minister made the announcement during a visit to the project site at Habaspur in Pangsha Upazila of Rajbari district. He said the project has already received approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), allowing preparations to move forward.
Officials have described the Padma Barrage as a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving water management and supporting economic development across multiple regions of the country. According to the minister, the project is expected to benefit 24 districts through improved irrigation, increased agricultural productivity, expansion of fisheries, and greater economic activity.
Anee said the project is intended to play a significant role in strengthening Bangladesh’s water resources management capacity while contributing to long-term development goals. He added that the barrage could also support power generation and help improve the efficient use of water resources.
During the visit, Prime Minister’s Finance and Planning Adviser Dr. Rasheed Al Mahmud Titumir highlighted the importance of water management initiatives in Bangladesh’s development planning. He said the Padma Barrage Project could become a key component of future water resource strategies and contribute to broader efforts aimed at improving river management and irrigation systems.
Supporters of the project believe it has the potential to reshape water distribution in several regions, helping strengthen agriculture and other sectors that depend heavily on reliable water supplies. As planning and implementation move forward, the project is expected to remain one of Bangladesh’s most closely watched infrastructure developments.
