Defence Staff Begin Preparations to Leave Historic Victoria Barracks as Sale Controversy Grows

Defence personnel based at Victoria Barracks in **Paddington, Sydney have reportedly begun preparations to vacate the historic military site, despite growing political opposition to the federal government’s plan to sell the property.

The 176-year-old Australian Army base is among 67 Defence-owned properties identified for potential sale as part of a nationwide asset disposal program. The initiative follows an independent review that found a number of Defence sites were underused or vacant and could be sold to generate revenue.

The federal government expects the broader property divestment program to raise up to $3 billion, with other notable sites, including HMAS Penguin at Middle Head in Sydney, also earmarked for sale.

The proposal has sparked significant community and political opposition. Over the weekend, thousands of people attended a rally in Sydney calling for the sale of Victoria Barracks to be abandoned.

The protest attracted support from across the political spectrum, including former Prime Minister John Howard, state Labor representatives, supporters of One Nation, members of the Greens, and local community groups.

Opponents argue that Victoria Barracks is an important part of Australia’s military heritage and should be preserved rather than sold for redevelopment.

Earlier, NSW Premier had publicly urged the federal government to reconsider the decision and retain the site.

However, despite those calls, Defence sources indicated that preparations for relocation are already underway.

According to reports, personnel have begun “packing boxes” as part of a plan to vacate the barracks before Christmas, suggesting the government is continuing with the transition process while debate over the site’s future continues.

The future of Victoria Barracks remains a significant issue in Sydney, balancing concerns over heritage preservation, urban development, and the management of Defence assets.
