A 13-year-old boy accused of carrying out a drive-by shooting in Perth will remain in custody for at least the next six weeks while his mother seeks suitable accommodation for the family. The boy, who recently relocated to Western Australia with his mother, appeared briefly via videolink in Perth Children’s Court on Monday. He did not apply for bail and will remain detained at Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Police allege the teenager used a semi-automatic rifle to fire more than 20 rounds into a house on Bert Street, Gosnells, during the early hours of October 17.

According to investigators, seven people, including several children, were inside the home at the time of the shooting. Despite the barrage of gunfire, no one suffered serious injuries.

Authorities allege CCTV footage captured audio of the incident, with approximately 27 gunshots heard during the recording.

The teenager was arrested the following day in a Belmont car park and later charged with eight offences, including:

Unlawful use of a firearm
Endangering life
Possession of stolen property
No authority to drive

During Monday’s hearing, the court was told the family was “new to Perth” and that the boy’s mother needed to secure stable and appropriate accommodation before any future bail application could be considered.

The court also heard that the child’s age may become a significant issue during proceedings. As the accused is under the age of 14, questions surrounding his ability to fully understand the seriousness and consequences of his actions are expected to form part of the case.

The matter has been adjourned while the teenager remains in custody and legal proceedings continue.
