The government plans to strengthen Bangladesh’s sports sector through the revival of major tournaments and the development of new sports facilities across the country, Relief Minister said at a recent sporting event in Lalmonirhat.
Among those present at the programme were Lalmonirhat Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman, District Council Administrator AKM Mominul Haque, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Rasel Mia, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mononita Das, District Sports Officer Md Kamruzzaman, alongside students, guardians, and local political leaders.
During his address, the minister announced that the Prime Minister’s Gold Cup Football Tournament would be relaunched under the initiative of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He said plans are in place to ensure the tournament is held regularly in the future.
According to the minister, the revival of the competition is expected to encourage greater youth participation in sports and create stronger enthusiasm for athletic activities throughout the country.
He also revealed that the government is considering the construction of stadiums in upazilas where such facilities do not currently exist, aiming to improve sports infrastructure at the grassroots level.
Emphasising the importance of sports as a viable profession, the minister said the development of talented athletes must be prioritised to achieve the vision set by the prime minister.
He noted that with proper investment, guidance, and support, Bangladeshi athletes would be better positioned to develop their skills and compete successfully at both national and international levels.
The minister further stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has already issued a number of directives aimed at addressing what he described as long-standing stagnation in Bangladesh’s sports sector.
As part of these efforts, the government has undertaken a plan to develop and improve sports grounds from rural communities to urban centres, ensuring wider access to sporting opportunities for young people.
Highlighting the social benefits of sports, the minister said the shortage of playgrounds in many areas has contributed to some young people becoming vulnerable to drug addiction and other social problems.
He expressed hope that expanding sports facilities and creating new playgrounds would encourage youth participation in healthy activities, helping steer them away from drugs and other harmful influences.
The initiative is expected to form part of broader efforts to strengthen grassroots sports development, nurture emerging talent, and promote healthier lifestyles among young people across Banglades
