The next round of negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, originally expected to take place in Rome in early September, has been postponed until October, according to a U.S. official.
Despite the delay, diplomatic engagement is set to continue. Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors are scheduled to meet at the U.S. State Department in Washington next week to discuss recent developments and the ongoing implementation of an agreement reached in June.
The discussions are centered on a framework that includes the disarmament of Hezbollah, a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the area through designated pilot zones. U.S. officials have described the framework as a mechanism aimed at supporting stability, Lebanese sovereignty, and Israeli security.
Regional tensions have remained elevated since the conflict involving Iran and subsequent cross-border hostilities involving Hezbollah and Israel. Although violence decreased following understandings reached in June, reports indicate that military activity has intensified again in recent days.
The announcement of the postponement comes shortly after Israel reported the destruction of Hezbollah tunnels in southern Lebanon. The resulting explosion was significant enough to be recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey as equivalent to a magnitude 4.1 earthquake.
Diplomatic efforts are expected to continue in the coming weeks as stakeholders seek to maintain dialogue and address ongoing security concerns in the region.
