Spain Records Hottest Sea Temperatures on Record as Marine Heatwave Intensifies

Spain experienced record-breaking sea temperatures this summer, with monitoring stations across the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts registering some of the highest readings ever recorded, raising fresh concerns about the impact of warming oceans on marine ecosystems and coastal communities.

According to Spain’s state port authority, Puertos del Estado, several monitoring buoys reported unprecedented water temperatures during the summer months. The most extreme reading was recorded by the Dragonera buoy in the Balearic Islands, which measured a sea surface temperature of 33.02 degrees Celsius (91.44 degrees Fahrenheit) on August 5, setting a new record for the authority’s buoy network.

The Mediterranean region was particularly affected, with nearly all monitoring stations in the Levante-Balear basin registering local temperature records. Coastal buoys near Tarragona and Barcelona in northeastern Spain recorded temperatures of 30.7°C and 30.5°C, respectively, on August 9, highlighting the intensity of the marine heatwave.

Record-high temperatures were also observed along Spain’s Atlantic-facing coastline. In the Bay of Biscay, several monitoring points reported unprecedented readings. A buoy near the northern town of Pasaia registered 28.4°C on June 23, while another monitoring station equipped with temperature sensors since 2006 recorded a record 25.27°C on August 12.

Scientists have increasingly linked rising sea temperatures around Europe to human-driven climate change, warning that prolonged marine heatwaves can have significant consequences for biodiversity, fisheries, tourism, and coastal economies. Warmer waters can disrupt marine habitats, increase stress on aquatic species, and contribute to more frequent extreme weather events.

The latest temperature records underscore growing concerns about the long-term effects of climate change on Europe’s coastal regions, as researchers continue to monitor evolving conditions across the Mediterranean and Atlantic waters.
