Dhaka’s Traffic Enters a New Era as Smart Technology Takes Control

2 min read

Dhaka’s chaotic streets long seen as a symbol of failed urban management are beginning to feel the tremors of a technological shift. For decades, the capital has battled relentless gridlock, rampant signal violations, wrong‑way driving, and footpaths swallowed by encroachers. But the new government’s rollout of an AI‑powered traffic enforcement system is injecting a rare sense of optimism into a city accustomed to disorder.

What makes this moment different is that it goes beyond symbolic gestures. The automated fine‑issuing system, now dominating social media conversations, is already nudging drivers toward behavioural change. In a city where breaking traffic rules often carried little consequence, the sudden arrival of instant digital penalties has altered the psychology of the road.

For years, Dhaka’s traffic enforcement struggled under the weight of limited manpower, corruption, and political interference. But with cameras now capturing violations and sending fines directly to smartphones, the old tactics of influence and negotiation are losing their power. Drivers are stopping at signals more consistently, and a sense of discipline, however fragile is beginning to take shape. If this momentum holds, Dhaka could see a meaningful reduction in the chaos that has defined its streets for generations.

Yet technology alone cannot fix a system built on deeper structural flaws. Dhaka’s traffic crisis is rooted in poor route planning, an unruly public transport network, footpath occupation, and the overwhelming influence of transport syndicates.

Smart enforcement may be a promising start, but lasting reform will require political will, administrative transparency, and a direct confrontation with entrenched interests. Without breaking the syndicate grip, no technological upgrade will endure.

Still, for the first time in years, Dhaka’s roads show a flicker of what a disciplined, modern city might look like and that in itself is a significant shift.
