The International Atomic Energy Agency has reported a sharp spike in drone activity near several Ukrainian nuclear power facilities, with more than 160 unmanned aerial vehicles detected over a two‑day period this week.
According to the agency, teams stationed at the South Ukraine, Chornobyl and Rivne nuclear power plant sites recorded the UAVs flying in their vicinity between May 13 and 14. The IAEA shared the update in a post on X, noting that while the surge in drone flights is significant, there has been no direct impact on nuclear safety at any of the facilities.
The agency did not specify the origin of the drones or whether they posed an immediate threat, but the increase comes amid ongoing conflict and heightened security concerns around critical infrastructure across Ukraine.
IAEA officials continue to monitor the situation closely as they work with Ukrainian authorities to assess potential risks and ensure protective measures remain robust.
