A 40-year-old Canberra woman is set to face court following a major police investigation into a collision that killed two cyclists and injured others in the ACT last month.
According to ACT Policing, the woman was allegedly driving a sedan that struck a group of five cyclists on Gungahlin Drive in Palmerston during the early hours of August 27.
The crash claimed the lives of Bridie Lee, 32, who died at the scene, and Ryan Riethmuller, 39, who later died in hospital from his injuries. The incident shocked Canberra’s cycling community and prompted an extensive investigation by officers from ACT Policing’s Major Collision Team.
Following the investigation, police have issued the driver with a summons to appear before court.
The woman is expected to face two charges of culpable driving causing death and one charge of negligent driving causing actual bodily harm.
The tragedy prompted a strong community response, with hundreds of cyclists, friends, family members, and supporters taking part in a memorial ride earlier this month to honor Lee and Riethmuller. Both victims were well known within the ACT’s triathlon and cycling communities.
Police said the matter will now proceed through the court system, where the circumstances surrounding the collision will be considered.
The woman is scheduled to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court on October 2.
