Bangladesh has called on Commonwealth member states to strengthen their collective support for the safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, while urging greater international cooperation to address a range of pressing global challenges.
The appeal was made by Acting Foreign Minister Humayun Kabir during the retreat session of the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting (CFAMM) held at the American University of Antigua (AUA) in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, according to a statement issued by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Highlighting the prolonged Rohingya crisis, Humayun Kabir said Bangladesh continues to shoulder a significant humanitarian responsibility and stressed that stronger collective efforts by Commonwealth nations are needed to ensure the refugees can return to Myanmar in a safe, voluntary, and dignified manner.
The minister also called for renewed international action to address a range of global issues, including peace and security, climate resilience, energy security, food security, and the responsible use of emerging technologies.
He warned that the increasingly complex global environment requires more effective and coordinated measures among nations to tackle growing geopolitical, environmental, and economic challenges.
Addressing climate change, Humayun Kabir emphasized the urgent need for the effective implementation of the Loss and Damage Fund, which was established to help vulnerable countries cope with the devastating impacts of climate-related disasters.
The acting foreign minister further urged Commonwealth countries to establish a coordinated framework aimed at increasing investment flows among member states, saying stronger economic partnerships could contribute to sustainable development and shared prosperity across the Commonwealth.
Bangladesh has consistently advocated for greater global responsibility-sharing on the Rohingya issue while also pushing for stronger international commitments on climate adaptation, disaster recovery, and economic cooperation.
The remarks reflect Bangladesh’s broader diplomatic efforts to mobilize international support for humanitarian, environmental, and development priorities on the global stage.
