Australian Man Dies in Bali Immigration Detention While Awaiting Deportation

An Australian man has died inside a Bali immigration detention centre, with officials confirming he was found unresponsive only hours after being detained for an alleged breach of visa conditions.

Authorities say the 39‑year‑old was taken into custody on Friday local time and placed under routine monitoring. A spokesperson for Bali immigration’s Ngurah Rai office said CCTV footage later showed the man remaining motionless for an extended period inside a rest room, prompting officers to intervene.

Staff checked his vital signs, administered first aid including supplemental oxygen and immediately coordinated with nearby medical services. Paramedics provided initial treatment before transferring him toward Bali Jimbaran General Hospital for intensive care. Officials say he was declared dead en route, with a preliminary medical assessment indicating cardiac arrest as the cause.

Indonesian authorities have not released the man’s identity, and it remains unclear whether he had any prior medical conditions. The incident is expected to prompt further scrutiny of detention procedures and monitoring protocols within Bali’s immigration system.
