Italian 22nd seed Luciano Darderi delivered one of the day’s most energetic moments, sprinting off court after securing his place in the second round of the Australian Open. On centre court, defending champion Madison Keys opened her campaign with a confident win over Ukrainian newcomer Oleksandra Oliynykova.

Australia’s results were mixed. Thirtieth seed Maya Joint exited in straight sets, while wildcard Taylah Preston thrilled home fans by battling through for her first grand slam victory.
