Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has arrived in Kuala Lumpur on an official visit at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, marking his first foreign trip since taking office. He landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 8:45pm local time on Sunday, accompanied by his spouse Dr. Zubaida Rahman.
Upon arrival, the Bangladeshi leader received a red‑carpet reception and a guard of honour, with both nations’ national anthems played during the ceremony. Malaysia’s Minister for Religious Affairs Zulkifli Hasan and his spouse welcomed the delegation at the VVIP terminal, where young Maisa Nur Aisha presented flowers to Dr. Zubaida Rahman.
Bangladesh’s High Commissioner Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury and Deputy High Commissioner Sahanara Monika were also present. From the airport, the prime minister was escorted in a special motorcade to Kuala Lumpur’s Shangri‑La Hotel, where he and his delegation will stay. The 50‑minute route from the airport to the hotel was decorated with Bangladeshi and Malaysian flags.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying the prime minister departed Dhaka at around 2:45pm. This visit marks the beginning of a significant diplomatic tour, with Tarique Rahman scheduled to visit Malaysia from June 21-22 and China from June 23-26, returning home on June 26.
Diplomatic observers believe the Dhaka-Kuala Lumpur-Beijing tour could open a new chapter in economic and strategic cooperation among the three countries.
In Malaysia, discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim are expected to focus on reopening the labour market, recruitment of Bangladeshi workers, investment, energy cooperation, and the Rohingya crisis.
According to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the China leg of the trip may see the signing of 15-17 bilateral documents, including around 13 MoUs, two agreements, one action plan, and one protocol, signalling a major expansion of cooperation.
