New South Wales Ambulance is being urged not to renew its contract with Northern NSW Helicopter Rescue Services (NNSWHRS) unless it can guarantee the organisation meets strict workplace‑safety standards, following damning evidence presented to a state parliamentary inquiry.
The inquiry initially convened to investigate alleged maintenance failures at Newcastle’s Calvary Mater Hospital broadened its scope to examine wider issues in public‑private healthcare partnerships. What emerged was a troubling picture of the culture inside NNSWHRS, with multiple witnesses describing an environment marked by bullying, psychological abuse and intimidation.
Committee chair Amanda Cohn said the testimony was deeply concerning, warning that the government must act before the situation escalates further. She said witnesses detailed a “toxic workplace culture” that had left some staff traumatised and unable to return to work.
