A woman has been left with severe injuries after a shark attack at Coogee Beach on Saturday morning, marking the latest incident in a troubling rise in shark encounters along Australia’s coastline.
Emergency services rushed to the popular eastern Sydney beach after reports that a 30‑year‑old swimmer had been bitten. According to police, members of the public dragged the woman from the water and immediately began first aid.
New South Wales Ambulance Inspector Mike Corlis said the victim suffered major wounds to her arm and leg, describing the injuries as extensive. “She has large flesh wounds to the leg and the arms that are going to require a lot of surgery,” he told reporters at the scene.
Authorities closed Coogee Beach and other beaches in the Randwick Council area for 24 hours as a precaution. Council mayor Dylan Parker said they were awaiting further advice from the NSW government before reopening the coastline.
Witness Nicola Logan told Reuters she saw a “massive pool of blood” in the water before spotting the injured swimmer struggling. “A lady kind of motioning to swim, lots of splashing, and then a ski paddler was out trying to bring her in,” she said.
The attack has heightened concerns among beachgoers as shark activity continues to rise across the country’s eastern seaboard.
