Aryna Sabalenka kept her march toward a maiden French Open title firmly on track, defeating Naomi Osaka 7‑5, 6‑3 in a high‑quality clash under the lights at Roland Garros.
In the first women’s night‑session match at the tournament in three years, the world No. 1 overcame a shaky opening to extend her extraordinary Grand Slam consistency she has now reached at least the quarter‑finals in her last 14 major appearances. Her next challenge will be Diana Shnaider, the rising Russian talent who awaits in the last eight.
Sabalenka praised Osaka’s aggression and the electric atmosphere on Philippe Chatrier, even treating the crowd to a playful “Moon Walk” after sealing victory. “She is such a great player… I’m happy with how I was able to put back the pressure on her,” she said. “I’m super happy with my serve. I’m super pleased overall with the performance.”
Osaka, playing in the fourth round in Paris for the first time, started brightly with a 2‑0 lead after a Sabalenka double fault. But the Belarusian immediately broke back, then snatched the opening set with a blistering return Osaka couldn’t control. From there, Sabalenka tightened her grip, breaking for 4‑3 in the second set with a deft half‑volley before closing out the match on her first match point.
Osaka fought hard but ultimately ran out of steam against Sabalenka’s relentless power and precision, bowing out after an impressive run on her least‑favoured surface.
