Prominent Surgeon Reza Adib Suspended From Practice After Being Charged With Rape

2 min read

Prominent obesity surgeon Reza Adib has been formally suspended from practising medicine as he faces multiple rape‑related charges, according to a notice published by Queensland’s Office of the Health Ombudsman (OHO). `

The OHO confirmed that Dr Adib’s medical registration was suspended effective June 2, 2026, meaning he is prohibited from practising for the duration of the suspension. Under the Health Ombudsman Act, the suspension will remain in force unless overturned by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal or revoked by the Ombudsman. The suspension is also listed on the AHPRA public register.

Dr Adib, 65, was charged last month with three counts of rape, two counts of deprivation of liberty, and one count of sexual assault. Police allege he detained a woman in her 30s at his Burleigh Heads apartment on March 30 and raped her three times. Court documents show he has surrendered his passport as part of his bail conditions. His case has been adjourned until July 7.

His lawyer, Dan Rogers, said the surgeon intends to “vigorously defend the charges.”

Dr Adib was in a relationship with former Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, which began in 2021. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by Ms Palaszczuk, nor any involvement in the allegations.

The case continues to draw significant public attention as legal proceedings move forward.
