Whitsundays Island Resort and Overwater Gondola Project Draws Multiple Buyers, Moving Vision Closer to Reality

2 min read

A bold proposal to transform a Whitsundays island into a luxury resort complete with an overwater gondola is a step closer to fruition, after attracting strong interest from several potential buyers.

Stone Island, located less than two kilometres off the coast of Bowen in North Queensland, returned to the market last month with refreshed development plans and the response has been swift.
Richard Vanhoff, who is managing the sale of the 92‑hectare property, confirmed he has received opening offers from five interested buyers in just two weeks.

“They’re happy to pay $23 million,” Vanhoff said, noting that the level of early interest signals confidence in the island’s long‑term tourism potential.

The master plan outlines an ambitious redevelopment: 18 oceanfront homes, nearly a dozen bungalows, and a revamped guest lodge designed in Dutch‑Indies‑style architecture. But the centrepiece and the most eye‑catching element is a proposed cable‑car gondola stretching from Bowen’s Flagstaff Hill lookout directly to the island. The overwater gondola has not yet received approval but is being touted as a future landmark attraction for the region.

If realised, the project would mark one of the most distinctive tourism developments in the Whitsundays, blending high‑end accommodation with a dramatic new transport experience across the Coral Sea.
