Socceroos Fall 1-0 to Mexico in World Cup Warm‑Up Despite Strong Second‑Half Fightback

1 min read

The Socceroos suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mexico in their penultimate World Cup warm‑up match at the Rose Bowl, undone by a sluggish first half that left them chasing the game.

Mexico struck early through Johan Vásquez, who rose highest to head home from a corner as Australia struggled to settle into rhythm. The Socceroos’ best chance of the opening period fell to Mo Toure, who missed an open goal shortly before the break a moment that proved costly.

After halftime, Australia looked transformed. Their pressing sharpened, their passing tightened and they controlled long stretches of the second half. But despite the improved tempo and several promising moves, an equaliser never came.

The result leaves Australia with one final opportunity to fine‑tune their preparations before the World Cup. The squad will be officially confirmed at 11:30am on Monday, ahead of their last warm‑up match against Switzerland on June 6. The Socceroos then open their World Cup campaign against Turkiye on June 14.
