Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, acting secretary general of the BNP and a political adviser to the prime minister, said that media freedom is essential for strengthening democracy and upholding the rule of law.
Speaking at an event marking the 31st founding anniversary of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU), Rizvi said that objective journalism can help reduce crime and corruption by increasing public accountability.
He also reflected on the July mass uprising, arguing that it played an important role in preventing a further deterioration of the national situation.
Rizvi stated that, despite the existence of numerous television channels and newspapers over recent years, opportunities for public political expression had been limited. He claimed that some individuals faced serious consequences for expressing dissenting views.
He further said that journalists working in challenging circumstances had helped preserve democratic discourse and emphasized that media organizations should publish verified and accurate information. He encouraged journalists to uphold professional standards and pursue the truth, even when facing significant risks.
