A tense night unfolded across Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of launching North Korean ballistic missiles during its latest wave of strikes. He warned that Moscow’s growing military partnership with Pyongyang now threatens not only Ukraine but also Japan and South Korea, saying Russia is no longer able to wage war without North Korean support.
Zelensky reiterated concerns he raised over the weekend, claiming that up to 50,000 North Korean soldiers may be preparing to join Russia’s military campaign. While the figure has not been independently verified, the president said the alleged deployment underscores a dangerous new phase in the conflict.
In the northern city of Sumy, two women aged 52 and 66 were injured when a Russian drone struck civilian areas, according to Sergiy Kryvosheenko, head of the Sumy City Military Administration. He said they were treated at the scene and confirmed that the attack damaged vehicles, warehouses and key infrastructure.
Shortly after midnight, air raid sirens echoed across Kyiv, followed by loud explosions believed to be air defence systems intercepting incoming missiles. A second alert jolted residents awake around 3am as the capital braced for further strikes.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said the city was under ballistic missile attack and emergency teams were responding. A warehouse on the outskirts of the capital caught fire, leaving one person injured. A children’s hospital was also hit, though all patients and staff were safely sheltering at the time.
The night’s events highlight a rapidly escalating battlefield dynamic one shaped not only by Russia’s continued assault but by the deepening military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.
