James Copenhaver, one of the campaign rally attendees wounded during the 2024 assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, has died at the age of 76.
Copenhaver was attending the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a 20-year-old gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop. During the attack, a bullet grazed Trump’s right ear, while several people in the crowd were struck by gunfire.
Copenhaver suffered serious injuries after being shot in the arm and abdomen. Although he survived the attack, he continued to experience lasting health effects and reportedly relied on a cane as he recovered from his wounds.
The shooting claimed the life of Corey Comperatore, who was killed while shielding his family from the gunfire. Another attendee, David Dutch, was also injured and survived.
According to reports, Copenhaver died on Wednesday at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. A statement released through family lawyer Joseph Feldman said he passed away surrounded by loved ones. No official confirmation has been provided regarding whether his death was directly linked to the injuries sustained during the rally attack.
Earlier this year, Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne Copenhaver, filed legal action against the federal government, alleging that the US Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security failed to provide adequate security at the event.
In a statement, the family remembered Copenhaver as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who valued hard work, integrity, and service to others. They also highlighted his military service, describing his dedication to the United States as a defining part of his life.
The death of Copenhaver brings renewed attention to the 2024 rally shooting, one of the most significant security incidents in modern American political history, which prompted widespread reviews of campaign event security and protective measures for public officials.
