Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to global peace, disarmament, and international cooperation, calling on the international community to strengthen efforts toward a more just and peaceful world.
Addressing world leaders, the prime minister said lasting peace cannot be achieved while military spending continues to rise at the expense of development and human welfare. He stressed the importance of disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control, describing excessive defence expenditure as a major obstacle to sustainable global progress.
Rahman said international relations should be guided by the principles of equality, fairness, mutual respect, dignity, and shared interests. He underscored the vital role of the United Nations in promoting dialogue, cooperation, and a global community that respects the sovereignty and independence of all nations.
The prime minister also reiterated Bangladesh’s support for UN-led initiatives aimed at promoting global peace, humanitarian values, and international stability.
The issue of Palestine featured prominently in his address, with Rahman reaffirming Bangladesh’s longstanding support for the Palestinian people. He expressed support for their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state through a peaceful and just resolution.
Highlighting another major humanitarian challenge, the prime minister drew attention to the more than 1.2 million Rohingya refugees currently sheltered in Bangladesh. He said the crisis originated in Myanmar and emphasized that a durable solution must also come from there.
“The only solution to this problem is the safe return of the displaced Rohingya population to their homeland, Myanmar,” he said, urging stronger and more effective international support to facilitate their voluntary, safe, and dignified repatriation.
Bangladesh has repeatedly called for greater global action on the Rohingya issue, warning that the prolonged displacement crisis places significant humanitarian, social, and economic pressures on host communities while delaying a lasting resolution for the refugees.
The remarks reflect Bangladesh’s continued focus on peacebuilding, humanitarian cooperation, and multilateral engagement as key priorities in its foreign policy agenda.
