Pope Leo XIV Warns of AI Risks During France Visit

Pope Leo XIV has cautioned against the risks posed by artificial intelligence, urging society not to lose sight of its humanity as technology becomes increasingly influential in everyday life.

Speaking at the Élysée Palace at the start of his four-day visit to France, the pontiff warned about the dangers of “losing our humanity amid a paradise of machines.” His remarks came after meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, where the two leaders held discussions on a range of social and global issues.

The Pope’s comments highlighted growing international debate over the rapid development of artificial intelligence and its potential impact on human values, employment, ethics, and society. While acknowledging the benefits of technological progress, he stressed the importance of ensuring that innovation remains centered on human dignity and the common good.

The visit’s main event will be a large outdoor Mass in Paris on Saturday, expected to attract more than 500,000 worshippers. An altar has been constructed at Place de la Concorde, while security measures have been significantly increased around the Champs-Élysées to accommodate the massive gathering.

Large crowds are anticipated throughout the Pope’s visit, reflecting renewed interest in spirituality and religious events across parts of France and Europe. Crowds also gathered ahead of his visit to Notre Dame Cathedral, where he is scheduled to travel in the popemobile.

French President Macron welcomed the Pope upon his arrival at Orly Airport, although he is not expected to attend any of the religious ceremonies due to France’s longstanding principle of separation between church and state.

Instead, the Paris Mass will be attended by Brigitte Macron, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, and several prominent political figures, including potential presidential candidates from across the political spectrum.

The Pope’s visit comes at a time when global discussions about artificial intelligence, ethics, and technological change are gaining momentum, with governments, businesses, and religious leaders increasingly weighing in on the challenges and opportunities presented by rapidly advancing technologies.
