Garment Workers Block Roads in Dhaka, Triggering Major Traffic Disruptions

2 min read

Thousands of garment workers staged demonstrations in Mirpur, Dhaka on Saturday, blocking several key roads and causing severe traffic congestion across the busy capital city area.

The protest began around 11:00am, with workers occupying major road intersections in Mirpur-10 and nearby locations, significantly disrupting traffic flow and leaving commuters stranded for hours.

The demonstrators are demanding a substantial increase in the minimum monthly wage, calling for it to be raised to Tk30,000. Protesters say the current wage structure is insufficient to cope with the rising cost of living and increasing household expenses.

As the demonstrations continued, authorities warned motorists and passengers to expect lengthy delays while travelling through affected areas. The traffic division advised commuters to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and exercise caution when using roads around Mirpur and adjoining routes.

The latest protest follows similar demonstrations earlier in the week. On Thursday, garment workers also blocked roads in Mirpur Gol Chattar and several surrounding areas as part of their ongoing campaign for higher wages and improved working conditions.

The garment sector remains one of Bangladesh’s largest industries and a major contributor to the national economy. As negotiations over wages continue, authorities are closely monitoring the situation amid concerns that further demonstrations could impact transportation, business activities, and daily life in the capital.

With workers maintaining pressure on employers and policymakers, the wage dispute is expected to remain a significant issue in the coming weeks.
