A former Adelaide prison employee has been convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a female inmate, following a tense four‑day trial that ended with unanimous guilty verdicts from a 12‑person jury.
Enio Screpanti, 67, had pleaded not guilty to the charges, which occurred in the early 2020s. But after just over two hours of deliberation, jurors found him guilty of rape and aggravated indecent assault prompting emotional reactions from his family as the verdicts were read aloud.
Prosecutor Christine Hanna immediately sought to have Screpanti’s bail revoked, citing the gravity of the offences. Defence barrister Gilbert Aitken opposed the move, but Judge Anne Barnett ruled that remanding Screpanti in custody was appropriate given the seriousness of the crimes.
During the trial, the jury heard harrowing evidence, including allegations that Screpanti sexually assaulted the inmate on a treadmill in the prison gym. Months later, he allegedly lured her to a shed under the guise of a work task before raping her.
