The Brisbane City Council will pour $5.6 million into a major new health and wellness initiative as part of its 2026/2027 budget, unveiling the Move Well Brisbane campaign the largest expansion of active‑living programs in the city’s history.
Move Well Brisbane is the next evolution of the council’s long‑running Active and Healthy program, which already delivers thousands of free and low‑cost fitness sessions across the city. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said Wednesday’s budget would deliver “the biggest boost to active and healthy programs that the city has ever seen.”
Schrinner said the goal is simple: to help residents stay active without straining their budgets.
“It’s about making sure Brisbane residents have the opportunity to stay active and healthy, to get out, to enjoy our amazing city, but also without hurting the hip pocket,” he said.
Under the expanded program, the number of participating businesses will grow to 400, and the total number of sessions will more than double to 20,000 over the next two years. The council is encouraging local operators to join the initiative and deliver free classes, workshops and activities that residents are eager to access.
Move Well Brisbane will build on existing offerings such as Pilates, yoga, and other fitness classes, while adding nutrition workshops and cooking sessions to support holistic wellbeing.
The investment marks a significant push to make Brisbane a more active, healthier city and to give local businesses new opportunities to engage with their communities.
