Government officials discussed agricultural production, crop research, and food security initiatives during a meeting at the Secretariat on Sunday involving representatives from the Agriculture Ministry.
According to ministry officials, efforts are underway to increase mustard production as part of a strategy to reduce dependence on imported vegetable oil. Authorities are also working on measures to boost onion production and storage capacity to help strengthen domestic supply and improve market stability.
During the meeting, officials highlighted progress in agricultural research, noting that Bangladesh has developed 1,090 crop varieties to date. Of those, 155 are rice varieties, reflecting ongoing efforts to improve productivity, resilience, and food production.
The discussion also focused on modernizing the agricultural sector through increased automation and improved farming methods. Officials emphasized the importance of reducing labor requirements and production costs while enhancing efficiency across the agricultural supply chain.
Participants reviewed current initiatives aimed at supporting farmers, improving crop yields, and strengthening the country’s agricultural capacity. The meeting also examined ways to expand technological adoption in farming and improve long-term food security.
Agriculture remains a key sector of the economy, and officials said continued investment in research, innovation, and production systems is essential to meeting future demand and supporting rural livelihoods.
