Australia Unveils National AI Framework to Balance Innovation With Control

2 min read

Australia is preparing to overhaul its approach to artificial intelligence, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese set to announce a national framework designed to harness AI’s benefits while preventing the technology from slipping beyond human oversight.

In a speech in Sydney on Wednesday, Albanese will declare an end to the federal government’s “issue‑by‑issue” handling of AI, signalling a shift toward a unified national strategy. The move comes amid growing public concern over data‑centre expansion, workplace automation, copyright protections for artists and the use of AI in defence.

To reassure Australians that their concerns are front of mind, Albanese will announce the creation of an Office of AI, operating within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. The office will coordinate the development of new “Australian Standards” for AI — a step aimed at ensuring the technology evolves in ways that serve the national interest.

One of the most pressing challenges is the fragmented approach taken by states and territories in approving and attracting the data centres needed to power AI systems. Albanese is expected to signal a stronger federal role in bringing that patchwork under a single, coherent framework.

The new strategy marks a significant turning point in Australia’s AI governance, aiming to balance innovation with accountability at a moment when the technology is reshaping industries, creative sectors and national security.
