When Stefanie Reilly walked away from her established life in Melbourne and moved to Italy alone at 40, she wasn’t chasing a fantasy she was confronting a question many Australians are now asking themselves: What do I want the next decade of my life to look like?
Her story has struck a chord. As the founder of a business helping Australians relocate to Italy, Stefanie told Yahoo News she’s seen a surge in people wanting to “escape Australia,” with more than 100 reaching out and two‑thirds of them women. Most are in their 40s and 50s, navigating relationship changes, empty nests, flexible careers, or simply a quiet restlessness that refuses to be ignored.
“They’ve just reached a point where they’re questioning whether they want to keep doing the same thing for the next 10 or 20 years,” she said. “There doesn’t always have to be some huge event that makes you want to change your life. Sometimes you just decide you want to experience something else.”
For Stefanie, Italy had always been a dream the language, the culture, the slower rhythm of life. But there was always a reason not to go. That changed in 2025, when a trip to Europe collided with the end of a relationship and a growing sense of career fatigue. Suddenly, the future she had imagined no longer fit.
“I was close to 40 and suddenly my future didn’t look like I had pictured,” she said. Instead of rebuilding her life in Melbourne, she chose reinvention. “I decided I could either try to recreate things again in Victoria’s capital, or I could do something completely different and change things up.”
A month after turning 40, she boarded a plane alone and began her new life in Italy.
