Nepalese authorities issued new flood alerts on Sunday, warning residents in already devastated districts to remain on high alert after water levels surged in the Bhotekoshi River. Emergency notices were pushed to people’s phones early in the day as rescue teams continued clearing a major highway linking Kathmandu to one of the regions worst hit by Wednesday’s catastrophic floods.
The disaster has left a staggering human toll across Nepal and Tibet, with at least 800 people dead and more than 3,000 missing, according to updated figures from both countries. Nepal’s disaster agency reported 788 deaths and 2,502 missing, while Chinese authorities confirmed 16 deaths and 546 missing on their side of the border.
The latest warnings followed information from Chinese officials about increased upstream water flow. China’s water resources ministry said a newly formed mountain lake created by Wednesday’s floods had mostly drained, but a crater holding 1.4 million cubic meters of water still posed a risk and required close monitoring.
In Dhading, one of Nepal’s worst‑hit districts, residents have begun returning to what remains of their homes. Many sat inside structures with walls washed away, shovelling thick mud and rubble from balconies and window frames. Others sifted through debris for anything salvageable.
One man returned to find his chickens alive; he tied them up and placed them in his truck.
“Everything is finished. Nothing is left. Not even our home,” said Sharmila Tamang, who was trying to recover belongings from the wreckage.
At a key power plant serving more than 20,000 people across four districts, workers began inspecting the heavily damaged facilities on Sunday to assess the destruction.
As rescue operations continue and flood alerts remain active, authorities warn that conditions could shift quickly — and communities must stay prepared for further danger.
