Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has abruptly taken its most advanced systems offline after the US government ordered the company to suspend access for all foreign nationals, including recent users in Australia.
The directive affects Anthropic’s cutting‑edge Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models systems the company had previously described as “too dangerous” for public release before later expanding access to international customers.
In a statement published Saturday morning (Australian time), Anthropic confirmed it had received an export‑control order from the Trump administration. The company said Washington had not provided details of its “national security concern,” but officials believe they have identified a potential method for bypassing the models’ safety guardrails.
Anthropic voluntarily embeds strict safeguards to prevent its AI from being used for cyberattacks, bioweapon development, and other harmful activities. The company said the government’s order left it no choice but to act immediately.
“The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance,” Anthropic said.
“Access to all other Anthropic models will not be affected.”
The company stressed it believes the situation stems from a misunderstanding, and said it is working with US authorities to restore access “as soon as possible.”
Anthropic is also exploring whether the models can be safely re‑released under revised controls a move that will be closely watched by global businesses and researchers who had only recently begun using the powerful systems.
