From Record-Breaking Speed to Real-World Impact: China’s Humanoid Robot Pioneer Sets Sights on Reliability

Just one week after his humanoid robot stunned the world with a historic sprint, engineer Jack Guo is already looking beyond records and toward a far more ambitious objective: making advanced robots reliable enough for everyday use.

Guo, who leads the development of TianGong Ultra and Omni at the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, known as X-Humanoid, captured global attention when TianGong Ultra completed a 100-meter run in an astonishing 8.64 seconds. The performance placed the robot ahead of the fastest human sprint record and highlighted the rapid progress being made in humanoid robotics.

Behind the headline-grabbing achievement, however, was an intense effort from engineers who spent days testing, repairing, and fine-tuning robots between races. Guo admitted that he only began to feel confident once the robot passed the halfway point without issues during its record-breaking run.
Now, the 34-year-old engineer is focused on a challenge he believes is even more important. Rather than simply building faster robots, Guo wants to transform high performance into high reliability and practical usability, helping humanoid machines move from demonstration stages into real-world environments.

The achievement offers a glimpse into China’s growing strength in humanoid robotics, fueled by state-backed research programs, extensive supply chains, and fierce competition among technology companies. Yet industry experts acknowledge that turning impressive demonstrations into commercially valuable products remains one of the sector’s biggest hurdles.

Visitors to X-Humanoid’s headquarters can trace the evolution of the TianGong robot series through a showroom featuring multiple generations of machines, including one still wearing the vest from a victorious half-marathon appearance last year. In research areas above, engineers continuously test and repair robots, adjusting hardware, refining movement systems, and conducting walking trials to improve performance and durability.

Founded in November 2023, X-Humanoid is supported by a mix of state-owned and private investors, including robotics company UBTech and Chinese technology giants Xiaomi and Baidu. The organization develops humanoid robot hardware, motion-control software, and artificial intelligence technologies, while also commercializing its own robotic platforms.

Although the company has not disclosed sales figures or deployment numbers, its customers include universities, research institutions, and businesses exploring industrial applications for humanoid robots. As demand for automation continues to grow, Guo and his team are betting that the future of robotics will be defined not only by speed and power but by consistency, reliability, and practical usefulness.

With China’s humanoid robotics industry accelerating at a remarkable pace, TianGong Ultra’s historic sprint may prove to be just the beginning of a much larger transformation in how intelligent machines are integrated into everyday life.
