Thousands of South Australian football fans poured into the heart of Adelaide on Sunday, turning The Drive into a sea of green and gold as the Socceroos claimed a momentous 2-0 victory over Türkiye a win made even sweeter by the brilliance of a hometown hero.

The 6,000‑capacity venue was buzzing long before kick‑off, with Australian supporters vastly outnumbering the pockets of Turkish fans who still made their presence felt with passionate chants. But it was Adelaide’s own Nestory Irankunda who ignited the atmosphere, scoring a superb first‑half opener that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

This World Cup squad carries a strong Adelaide flavour, with Irankunda joined by fellow South Australians Tete Yengi, Mo Touré, Awer Mabil and Paul Izzo one of the city’s most significant representations in national team history.

At half‑time, a group of young fans wearing Irankunda‑themed shirts danced and chanted “Irankunda baby,” capturing the electric pride sweeping through the venue. For many, seeing a local star shine on the world stage transformed the match into a moment of pure sporting joy.

As the final whistle confirmed Australia’s commanding win, Adelaide’s celebration showed no signs of slowing a night where community pride, football passion and a rising superstar combined to create something unforgettable.
