Actor and comedian Russell Brand has told a jury in London that many of his friends and family distanced themselves from him after a television documentary aired allegations of sexual misconduct, leaving him unable to find people willing to testify in his defence.
Brand is currently standing trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, facing a series of charges including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault.
The 51-year-old is accused of offences involving six women in the United Kingdom between 1999 and 2009. Brand has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has consistently denied engaging in any non-consensual sexual activity.
During the opening of his defence case, Brand took the witness stand and said the documentary and subsequent media coverage had a devastating effect on his personal life and relationships.
According to Brand, many people close to him distanced themselves after the allegations became public.
During questioning by his barrister, Ian Winter KC, Brand was asked whether former friends or associates would support him in court.
“Will they touch you with a bargepole?” Winter asked.
“No,” Brand replied.
Brand also challenged the description of the programme that publicised the allegations.
“I don’t call it a documentary, I call it a TV show,” he told the court.
Allegations Emerged After Media Reports
The prosecution has previously told jurors that the six women involved in the case did not know one another and came forward independently after seeing allegations aired in a documentary and reported in subsequent news articles.
Prosecutors argue that the complaints emerged separately from unrelated individuals, while the defence maintains that Brand is innocent of the charges.
Court Hears Evidence from Multiple Women
Earlier in the trial, jurors heard evidence from a woman who alleges Brand raped her during a political conference in 1999.
The court continues to hear evidence relating to the various allegations, which span a decade of Brand’s career.
As with all criminal proceedings, the charges remain allegations unless proven in court. Brand continues to deny all accusations against him, and the trial is ongoing.
